On the bright morning of Friday, June 5, members of the UIS Department from Uganda Christian University embarked on a community outreach to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital to provide essential items to expectant mothers and mothers with newborns in the hospital’s maternity ward. As a regional referral hospital, it receives patients not only from neighboring districts, but also from far beyond, bringing together people from all walks of life. We were therefore inspired to extend a helping hand to mothers during one of the most important moments of their lives. Through this outreach, we hoped to offer not only practical support but also encouragement to mothers in the maternity ward.
The journey to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital took approximately one and a half hours. It was a peaceful drive, filled with cheerful conversations, laughter, and a shared sense of purpose as the team looked forward to the day’s activities.
Upon our arrival, we observed the required SOPs. We were warmly welcomed by the Hospital Administrator, who assigned the Senior Nursing Officer to guide us through the designated areas of the maternity ward. This allowed us to meet the mothers, interact with the healthcare staff, and spend time with the newborns.
The visit was both humbling and inspiring. We saw the joy on the mothers’ faces as they embraced their newborns, a joy that often coexisted with the physical exhaustion and pain that accompany childbirth. Looking at the tiny babies beginning their journey in this beautiful world was a powerful reminder of the hope, resilience, and promise that every new life embodies.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Hospital Director, Dr Robert Ssentongo, and the entire hospital team for their warm hospitality and the remarkable work they continue to do in serving the community. We were particularly impressed by the cleanliness of the facility, the professionalism of the staff, and the well-organized systems in place. The clear procedures, informative flowcharts, and efficient coordination reflected a strong commitment to delivering quality healthcare.
As we concluded our visit, we left with a renewed appreciation for the dedication of healthcare workers and the importance of community partnerships in supporting mothers and their newborns. We are grateful for the opportunity to make a small contribution and remain committed to initiatives that bring hope, dignity, and practical support to the communities we serve.
